Annual xanga post time.. ------ 2008 ------ what an interesting year. Schoolwise: this year I declared my majors, had a really good and a not so good semester in terms of grades, and decided on a few possible routes for myself postgraduation. I tried many different things this year: landed my first professional job for a semester, went to summer school for the first time (8hrs/day of math twice a week yessss), started living "on my own" in an apartment, and decided to try some new stuff outside of school, namely asuc and apo. Very eventful, very busy, but all of my choices this year have been very rewarding and have given me both a better grasp over being independent and a better grasp over expressing my individuality. In a nutshell the word for the year was: Discovery Discovery of the new in my responsibilities, surroundings, and within myself. Okay, onto resolutions =) 2008 Resolutions: [Guide: Bold=Resolution completed, Parenthesis=My thoughts) 1.) Work on my communication with others. I think I can get caught up with what I am saying and not really think through my words. (yes i got my first one! I've definitely become a better communicator since I've focused a lot on keeping my head on straight and being clear and precise with words) 2.) Be healthy. I need to work on getting my blood pumping regularly and cut down on some of those delicious fatty foods... well at least get my blood pumping lol. how can i live w/o tater tots wowwww... (Okay, after taking nst10, I think I have a MUCH better idea what I should be eating. I stay away from fatty foods now, and I have been staying very close to healthy choices, im going to have an orange right now actually..) 3.) Play guitar more regularly. its not really efficient to only play during breaks haha, you tend to forget important things lol. (Yeah, i don't want to talk about this. i only play during breaks i feel like i won't be able to change that, unless i do less extracurricular stuff, which won't happen =\) 4.) Learn more cooking stuff from my mom. This'll be important for me this year, considering i don't wanna be a ramen junkie haha. or waste all my money on eating out lol. so thats like, either saving a lot of money w/ ramen but being in a bad mood all the time, eating healthily, or see my money disappear and be eating LOTS of greasy foods... errrr... LEARN TO COOK PLZ. (yeahh!! being on my own forced me to cook more so now I'm very comfortable in a kitchen. i make some killer ramen too though..) 5.) Brush my teeth properly. I JUST REALIZED I BRUSH MY TEETH DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS THIS YEAR... argh. i've been practicing better technique this winterbreak lol, i better refine it more this year. (I am toothbrushing king now, no more needs to be said) 6.) TRY FLOSSING WOW. uh yeah. i should floss -_-, but man hate how it makes my gums bleed. but thats only because i don't floss regularly. bad cycle haha (okay besides finals times i have been flossing daily so wow! this resolution really worked lol, im glad i put it down) 7.) Grow to 6 feet. i don't know if this is a proper resolution actually lol. can my actions affect how much i grow this year? well... THEY BETTER CUZ I WANNA JOIN THE 6FT CLUB. (time to move this onto next year's list) 8.) Get better at remembering names. I swear i am the worst at this. I have this way of forgetting a person's name about 20s after they tell me... well.. unless i repeat it in my head until i can get to facebook and search for them lol. yeah this is bad. fix this plz. (Given that I had to do this a LOT this semester, I'd say I did a good job since I suddenly met a good 100 people this semester) 9.) Make better use of free time. Okay, so theres some things that i do in my free time that i could perhaps do less of. i could perhaps devote this time to some more productive things. PERHAPS. MAYBE. OKAY? MAYBE. (i have no more free time so i managed to complete this resolution by default haha) 10.) Get all A's. i really gotta roll down that 4.0 hill sometime. I wonder if it works on second semester sophmores... (mm was looking good until this semester lol, but thats why i'm never taking 6 classes+rushing apo+asuc again) 11.) Get more involved in something. i feel so unproductive if im not involved. (CHECK) 12.) Hang out with friends more. I should really try to make more time for people and not be lazy about it. (I got closer to the people that matter, so check) 13.) Be more spontaneous. hey now, everybody loves the spontaneous one right? (I've been a lot more comfortable in my own skin this year) 14.) Become more professional. I need to speak in better business jargon and stuff. also i need that sort of wardrobe. mm also i need a job haha. (I got that professional job experience so thats a check, plus im much more comfortable with public speaking) 15.) Write down your thoughts more. I kind of miss blogging. Its a good stress release. also its good for logging your thoughts for later. also it gives people a chance to interact with you. wow, sounds good lol. why haven't i returned to the blog-o-sphere sooner? (haven't blogged, too busy. I'll have a blog related resolution for 2009 though) 16.) Get a really cool phone. MY CONTRACT ENDS IN AUGUST. that means.. PHONE MARKET HERE I COME BABY. projecting... a sony ericsson. (uhh, i've pushed back getting a new phone, but i can get an upgrade whenever i think. not going to be a sony ericsson though, i really want a wifi phone..) 17.) Try some graphic design freelancing. ooo this is gonna be tough. if i have the time i should really go for this though, i miss using photoshop. (didn't happen, won't happen until after graduation i think.. or when i decide to make it a summer project to make myself a website, maybe this year) 18.) Start a portfolio. I should have done this last year but given the market lately... i decided to put it off haha. but yeah this year I should really think about doing this. (PUT IT OFF LOL, THAT WAS SOME GOOD THINKING LAST YEAR) 19.) Find a great apartment. i really want an apartment i like haha. it should be nice and clean. (yeah! i like my apartment + roomies. couldn't ask for much more.. except maybe some more windows and some sunlight. and a working stove fan...) 20.) Find a boo. applications accepted =) (oh shoot, i forgot i made this a resolution.. this sounds too desperate.. no more resolutions like this) wow! okay so thats 12 of 20, not bad. especially considering a few of those were unrealistic. I made good headway this year =) ----- 2009 ----- New Resolutions: 1. Consistently read my blogs and the news. Right now it’s much too on and off, college students tend to stay in this sort of bubble unless they read the news and stuff, since we’re so busy with school. 2. Ace GRE’s 3. Don’t get beat by school 4. Really find out what I’ll be doing after graduation. Get a grip on life after undergrad 5. HAVE AN AMAZING 21ST. 6. Keep learning Chinese even though I won’t be taking it anymore at Berkeley. I really do want to keep improving. 7. Just have a good time this year. Don’t get too caught up in things. Enjoy each day. Some years are better than others, I want this year to be a good one. 8. Feel uncomfortable. Step out of my comfort zone. Grow up, mature. 9. Be more selective with my time. Sometimes I need to do what I should be doing, rather than what I want to be doing. Think about how my choices will affect me in the long run. 10. Go to office hours, get help as I need it, but go to office hours regardless. Professors are a resource; they set up that time for us, I can at least just go and do homework there. 11. 6 Foot Club. No joke... positive thinking is the first step 12. Expand my vocabulary. 13. AIM less. This takes up a lot of time and I’m not very good at multi-tasking so if I chat less then I can get more stuff done. 14. Work all the way through finals, I have this tendency to do well and work hard through the year and slack off during finals which sometimes drops me a notch in grades. 15. Summer project: Make a personal website 16. Find the time to cook and try making new types of dishes, be exotic. 17. Become more independent with my finances. I need to try to stop getting too many free handouts from the parents. 18. Read more academic papers. I should be able to use the skills I’ve learned in class to understand research papers 19. Summer project 2: Write an excel spreadsheet to track my finances so I can see where my money is going, establish budget 20. Use the school library for more than just studying… there are books there too? 21. Just be proactive, make things happen for yourself, don’t wait for miracles. =) Cheers SP
